Baguio City Day

This day is the 99th Baguio Charter Day. On September 9, 1909, almost exactly 99 years ago, Baguio which was known as “Kafagway” (meaning rono or tall grasses) was declared as a chartered city and the and at the same time called as the “Summer Capital of the Philippines“.
Next year Baguio will be celebrating its Centennial Day. The residents should be bracing for a grand occasion in celebration of their beloved city’s 100th birthday.
But wait for a moment, there seems to be lack of excitement among the Baguio residents. Are the Baguio people aware that their city is already 99 and about to be 100 years old?
As I walk around the city this rainy afternoon it seems that there’s nothing special happening. All things move as usual and if you don’t read the local newspaper you might not even aware that it’s Baguio Day!
Well, this is the modern Baguio City. If you’d allow me to base my observations from my childhood days, I can say that so many things have changed. The main city is so much crowded now. There were no open spaces anymore.
Before I could go and enumerate all the painful changes Baguio has become maybe I have to start this blog with a positive tone. Being the very first post on this blog I should say that there’s still a hope for a new future Baguio.
